It received its royal charter in 1900 making it the first English civic or 'red brick' university to receive its own royal charter with students accepted regardless of their background or religion. It is a founding member of both the Russell Group of British research universities and the international network of research universities. The University of Birmingham prides itself on a longstanding tradition of innovation and progressive initiatives. The university was a founding member of the National Union of Students, and the first in the country to be built on a campus model, incorporate a medical school and offer degrees in dentistry. Birmingham is a truly global university producing world-leading research. Today, the university cites nanotechnology, gene therapy, virtual reality and robotics as being at the forefront of its research priorities. · A place in university accommodation is guaranteed for all international students who are new to Birmingham; please refer to the university website for details, terms and conditions. · A range of accommodation includes single study bedrooms with shared kitchen and bathroom facilities, en-suite rooms with their own bathroom, as well as a selection of modern self-contained studios and apartments. All rooms have access to high-speed network and Internet access, and most rooms are within a 15-20 minute walk of the university's campus. · Students at the Vale Village can take advantage of Meal Plan, which provides a weekly balance of funds to spend at university food outlets at the Vale and across campus. · International students share halls of residence with UK students for a truly multi-cultural experience. There is also a dedicated 'Global Community' residence at Pritchatts House. Rents range from £87-106 per week for a single room in self-catered accommodation in 2017-18.
